Ron's Christmas Wine Post

Ron here. Last month, when I posted about pairing wines with Thanksgiving turkey, I also made a case for serving Pinot Noir. Besides pairing well with dark meat, a berry finished Pinot Noir goes well when serving ham with a rather smoky glaze.

Now with Christmas upon us, this is a reminder not to hesitate reaching for another bottle of Pinot. As mentioned in the pre-Thanksgiving post, I recommend Hahn Winery’s Pinot Noir or the Pinot Project from Michael Skurnik. Both can be found in the $12 - $15 range and both Chalet Premier and Vintage Estates should have them in stock.

But if the ham has a more sweetened crust, temper that sweetness with a darker fruit-filled red. A Grenache would work great and one of the best buys I’ve ever come across for any blend is Evodia Old Vine Grenache from Spain. It’s 2010-2013 vintages have been consistently good and renders those smokier tones and the darker taste of blueberries and blackberries.

As of this afternoon, Vintage Estates has a few bottles left at $9.99 and Barrel 33 (formerly WineStyles) in Howland is well stocked at $10.99 a bottle.

If you celebrate Christmas, make it Merry. And if you don’t, these wines will still render that same feeling.

Salute!

Dime Decanting

This past year, I hosted three wine tastes at the homes of different friends. For the evening, I offered six to seven samples as part of the taste, along with food pairings for each selection.

For a taste, I serve the wine straight from the bottles and let them be the stars of the show. But, I will always decant them before serving. When I decant a wine, I find they need 45 minutes to release their true scents to be savored and as advertised.

I own a wine decanter and never really need more than one at home. But, when we’re sampling six or seven different blends over a three-hour tasting, I need to decant multiple varietals at the same time and don’t want the fuss of buying/using/preserving six or seven decanters. Really, who would?

So, I improvised. A while back, I discovered that a Trenta size Starbucks cup is 31 ounces; about 22

percent more than a bottle of wine. So, I went to my nearest Starbucks and they were kind enough to give me six empty Trenta cups in time for my wine taste. With that, I concurrently decanted six bottles of wine and it didn’t cost me a dime. When I was ready to serve a wine, I used a funnel to return the decanted wine from the trenta cup back to its bottle for serving.

With a little creativity, multiple makeshift decanters can be made from the least likely of sources. If you’re serving a few wines and need decanters in a pinch, stop at Starbucks. If they can’t help, try any convenience store that offers fountain drinks of similarly obscene sizes and ask for some; or, as I call it, Hillbilly Decanting.

In October, a couple friends and I rented a two bedroom apartment in Paris for five days. It was my first visit to France and wine was a mere formality. Upon discovery, the apartment lacked the accoutrement for real wine enjoyment aside from some glasses. So, I improvised. On the living room display were three good-sized Ikea vases. Combined with a funnel I found in the kitchen drawer, my overseas apartment decanting came to life. In this instance, the vase made for a beautiful serving vessel and didn’t return the decanted wine back to the bottle.

If you want to try a vase as your decanter, words to the wise; have your funnel, test your vase’s fluid capacity with water, and pour smoothly and slowly. And for all ideal decanting, shoot for 45 minuted before serving. To that end, try this; open a bottle and serve a glass. Make note of what you taste. Then decant it, wait 45 minutes later, pour yourself another glass and notice the difference. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Also consider that most wine varietals are great for decanting, though the more popular champagne and ports remain in question. Play those safe and serve as is, slightly chilled and right after popping the cork or twisting the cap.

Salute!

OVI Checkpoints in Youngstown = .281% OVI Charges. Waste of Time.

For those of you keeping score on how worthless these OVI Checkpoints are, here's the latest:

There were two OVI Checkpoints on November 21st. They scored a .281293952% OVI Charge rate. Less than one-third of one percent of the cars stopped were CHARGED with OVI. Charged. Not convicted. Pathetic results. Waste of taxpayer money and police hours. You'd get better results having six police officers driving around than these checkpoints.  Numbers don't lie.

The first, at Mahoning Ave & Howard Ave resulted in one charge of OVI, one summons for no license, one citation for no child restraint and one citation for an expired license. 667 vehicles passed through that checkpoint. 16 were investigated.

The second, at Mahoning & Bell Vista, had one charge of OVI, two summons for driving under suspension, one for no operators license, one for drug abuse, one for no seat belt and one felony arrest for improper handling of a firearm.  41 vehicles went through, six were investigated.

So, two checkpoints, 711 vehicles illegally forced to stop and show their papers, for lack of a better term.

For two OVI charges.

Remember, not convictions. Charges.

Nine others were charged or arrested for other things.  Citizen harassment and police sweeps at their finest. 4th Amendment? Not in America.

Ron's Suggestions for Thanksgiving Wine Pairings

Note from Eric:  I've know Ron for 20+ years. I wasn't aware of his vast wine knowledge until recently. This was published on our Facebook page, but I wanted to share it here for our Twitter & Blog friends. Look forward to more from Ron in the future. Cheers!

The novelty and discussion that is pairing wines with food will breath openly like most decanted varietals. Thanksgiving is no different, especially considering the consistent theme at the dinner table this Thursday.

Since the gobble gobble takes front and center, a dry Riesling is an ideal wine to serve. It goes well with turkey meat and the fruitiness is a nice compliment if you’re doing sweet potatoes.

Chateau Ste. Michelle’s Dry Riesling is a failsafe pick around $10.00. Yes, it is abundantly produced in Washington and, yes, can be found at most any local wine store and higher end retail grocer. But the quality is simply not compromised.

If you’re serving mashed potatoes and gravy with your turkey, an oaked chardonnay can be a better match for your rich buttery offerings. The lower acidity is just enough to enjoy with the creaminess of your side dishes and especially goes well with white meat.

In a higher price range, Jordan Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley of California is a solid choice for around $40.00

From the Monterey region, Bernardus is another Chardonnay to consider at nearly half the price.

But, if you fancy reds, you can’t go wrong with a Pinot Noir. It’s gentle and light bodied so as not to compound the effects of your turkey’s Tryptophan and accelerate your visit to the recliner. Plus, quite a few Pinot Noir selections have notes of red berry; a perfect complement to your cranberry sauce.

And Pinot Noir goes well not just with a turkey's dark meat, but for those planning to serve ham. The berry presence goes well with a ham’s sweetness, sometimes smokiness and glaze.

There are a couple reasonably priced wines that I’ve long enjoyed. One is Hahn Winery from the Monterey Region. You should be able to find this at a few of your local wine shops as well as Whole Foods in the $12-15 range. I also recommend The Pinot Project from Michael Skurnik wines, which can be found in the same price range, including Vintage Estates in Boardman and Chalet Premier in North Lima.

With that, you can take a more liberal approach to your wine pairings on Thanksgiving where you can accommodate more than one food and palate. That said, it wouldn’t hurt to mix it up if your budget allows for it and your tastes vary.

Salute and Happy Thanksgiving!

The 2014 NFL Draft Drinking Game

It's finally here ... the NFL Draft. And, like every big event, there's a drinking game you can play along with. Since we have 32 picks today, here are 32 reasons to drink, so grab your group, divide up by numbers, draft your numbers and have your drinks ready!

Drink once when you hear the following phrase:

1. High Motor
2. Upside
3. Long Arms
4. Intangibles
5. Stiff Hips
6. A Football Player
7. Character Issues
8. Raw
9. Can Make All The Throws
10. Need vs Value
11. Football IQ
12. Sleeper

Drink twice when ...

13. Mel Kiper is shown shaking his head while Todd McShay talks
14. Jon Gruden says, "I LIKE THIS (player name)"
15. Johnny Manziel is described as a "boom or bust" player
16. Chris Berman creates a lame player nickname
17. Jon Gruden uses an insane metaphor (comparing Eric Fisher & America)
18. Jon Gruden mentions a play by name (Lock 48 Z Post)
19. Bill Polian talks about how he drafted Peyton Manning
20. Stabby Ray Lewis takes us to church with a motivational tangent
21. Chris Berman moans "Ohhhhhh" after a surprise pick
22. Blake Bortles' girlfriend Lindsay Duke is shown

Finish your drink when ...

23. A fellow ESPN analyst makes fun of Mel Kiper's hair
24. Mel Kiper's 1994 fight with Bill Tobin is referenced or shown
25. They mention Tom Brady was drafted in the 6th round
26. Mel Kiper tries cutting off Todd McShay by screaming "Todd, Todd, Todd..."
27. The names Brett Favre or Tim Tebow are mentioned
28. A bad team is said to be "a player like (guy being considered or just picked) away from contention."
29. Johnny Manziel falls to the second round.
30. There's an insane house party celebration by someone who was drafted higher than expected and is not in New York for the draft.
31. Ryan Leaf is mentioned. He'd finish his drink. If he wasn't in jail.
32. A player cries after being drafted.

Cheers!

It's Thursday. And Patio beers are better than Regular beers!

It's Thursday. And unless Mother Nature played a(nother) cruel joke on the Valley, it's warm, sunny and beautiful weather for patio beers.
